« The images that appear

behind my closed eyelids

must be looked at and colored in,

especially not destroyed by opening my eyes.

Behind my closed eyelids hide new horizons.»

Ficht Tanner

(b. 1952, Trogen, Switzerland) is a contemporary Swiss musician, poet, and visual artist working in drawing, painting, and embroidery.

Ficht Tanner is a self-taught contemporary Swiss artist in the fullest sense.

His work goes far beyond the conventional boundaries usually associated with Art Brut. Since childhood, sounds have revealed forms and colors to him — and vice versa. This synesthetic way of perceiving the world shapes an artistic universe that is, by nature, radical, both artistically and socially.

Throughout his life, Ficht Tanner has followed only improvisation, never creating with references in mind, nor seeking to please an audience — but simply to give visual form to his inner world. His radical gesture lies in this constant attempt to translate, through line and needle, what he calls the “universal” within himself.

Embroidery, drawing, and music come together in a synesthetic body of work that is total and radical, spiritual and visionary.

« I wanted and I had to, every day,

let myself be surprised,

and in the evening simply look

at what I have embroidered. »
